Atomic Theory

Example 1       Answer

How many moles are in a Y grams of a substance whose molecular mass is Z unified atomic mass units (u)

Example 2       Answer

The atomic mass of A is greater than the atomic mass of  B. Given that you have 1 kg each of A and B. Which has the most atoms?

Theermal Expansion

Example 3     Answer

Given an aluminum block that is 20.0 m long at 20.00 C. The coefficient for linear expansion of the material is 25.0 x 10-6/C0

What would its length be at 00 c?

Example 4      Answer

Given that the density of water at 40 C is 1.00 x 103 kg/m3.  What is its density at 940 C?

Ideal Gas Law

Example 5:   Answer

Assume tht air is an ideal gas. At atmospheric pressure (1 atm) and a temperature of 20 degrees C (273 degrees K) it is compressed in a cylinder to 1/9 of its original volume. Assume at the end of the compression the pressure of the compressed reaches 40 atm. What is the temperature of the air?

Ideal Gas Law in Terms of Molecules; Avagadro's Number

Example 6   Answer

A cubic box with a volume of 5.1 x 10-2 m3 is filled with air at atmospheric pressure at 20 degrees C. The box is closed and heated to 180 degrees C. What is the net force on each side of the box?

Molecular Interpretation of Temperature

Example 7  Answer

By what factor will the rms speed of gas molecules increase if the temperature is increased from 0 degrees C to 100 degrees C?
