Force Between Two Parallel Wires

REFER TO EQUATION IN HANDOUT

Two parallel conductors carrying currents  I1 and I2  are shown on the right

Magnetic field B1 produced by I1  is shown (the field B2 produced by I2 not shown)

Note that B1 points into the page at the position of I2

Each wire produces a field that is felt by the other  ð each exerts a force on the other  

Magnetic field B1 produced by I1 is given by

     B1 =  m0 I1/2pd

The force F2 exerted by B1 on a length l2 of wire 2 is F2 = I2B1L2    where L is length

The value for B1 above can not be substituted into this expression to find the force
