Rotational Motion - Merry Go Round
One student in each of the two seats
The two students should be of approximately equal weight
Place both feet on the rails and keep them there
Spin so that the two occupants are leaning toward the arm rest; the spin would be clockwise in the above picture
Other students stay clear of the merry go round
Throw a ball so that it lands in the trash can in the center - one ball is shown
Complete the items listed below
Turn In the Following
Draw a circle to represent the merry go round.
Assume that you are spinning counter clockwise and for the following tasks, assume that you are at the 3 oclock position and the
ball is in your hand.
ð Draw the velocity vector, along with its components, if any, for the ball prior to throwing it
ð Assume that you throw the ball towards the bucket in the center.
Draw the velocity vector (on another circle) for the ball along with its components, if any, just after it is thrown.
Assume that the merry go round has an angular velocity of w.
ð Describe, using the above, a good strategy for placing the ball in the bucket, in terms of the throwing direction
